“Caffe Pendiente” is a philanthropic practice more than a century old. Originating in Naples, Italy, this tradition has since gone global, catching on all across Europe, South America, and especially Mexico. Its origins are simple, but its message is powerful. When a customer who has experienced a turn of luck or good fortune buys themselves a coffee, they can pay for another one which is left with the café. This coffee is considered ‘pending’. Then, when someone down on their luck comes into the café, they can ask if a pending coffee is available, and the original customer’s generosity is paid forward. This simple gesture may not change someone’s life, but it can certainly make their day!
